Research activity - Faculty of Engineering - Main research topics

The research in UTIU Faculty of Engineering takes place in close cooperation with the affiliated universities, mainly Turin Polytechnic and the University of Rome III. The agreements provide, in addition to resource sharing of laboratories and libraries, to participate in joint research projects, both Italian and foreign markets.
In the field of civil engineering, research topics are framed in the field of preservation of heritage and monuments, risk analysis in the presence of events such as earthquakes and avalanches, and development of innovative materials for infrastructure and buildings.
In the field of Engineering Management, the research focuses on the study of process and product innovation and logistics.
In the ICT sector, in addition to basic research on software engineering, the interest is directed to telecommunications (broadband, wireless) and engineering of complex systems.

In particular, the academic staff of the Faculty of Engineering, conducts research in the following areas.

Area Electrical Engineering
The research focuses on studies of the phenomena of lightning and surge induced on transmission lines, the modelling of high-speed interconnects and modelling for components of particle accelerators.

Area of Mathematics
The research activity is mainly devoted to the study of theory and applications of special functions and orthogonal polynomials with special reference to operatorial techniques for solving ordinary differential equations and partial derivatives. Many applications have historically been recognized as part of accelerator physics, as well as of theoretical physics, thanks to the plethora of operational results obtained in the field of special functions.

Area of Computer Science
The area activity is focused on the study of Authentication of computer systems in particular and in the testing of the authentication systems used by operating systems (such as Kerberos, developed at MIT and provided for assessment by DEC) and the services Internet, the development of public key certification infrastructure, digital signature and application of the security of networked applications. Additional research interests include Intrusion Detection and validation methodologies to the integrity of the systems.

Area of Chemistry
The research focuses on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance in various areas ranging from the characterization of organic molecules, the determination of the chemical and physical properties of materials derived from polymer.

Area of Physics
The research focuses mainly on issues such as QCD is analytically that the lattice. Other aspects of the research regarding the study of temporal correlations between electromagnetic emission related to seismic activity on Earth and the precipitation of particles the Van Allen belt.

In parallel, and in synergy with the other faculties of UTIU, a research and independent learning is represented by the psycho-pedagogical models associated with distance learning and the continuous updating of the multimedia platform for the training, which has become an international standard in the field.
